Protecting Your Trees from Caterpillars: Spongy Moths, Winter Moths, and Smart Treatment Options

tel:860-337-4850Caterpillar infestations can quickly defoliate and stress even the healthiest trees, reducing vigor and leaving them vulnerable to further pest and disease issues. At ArborActive, we specialize in identifying and treating caterpillar outbreaks with targeted, eco-conscious solutions. In this post, we’ll focus on two particularly damaging pests in our region: spongy moths (formerly known as gypsy moths) and the relatively new arrival, winter moth. We’ll also discuss the best timing for treatment and outline biorational and organic options that protect your trees without harming the environment.

Spongy Moth: A Persistent Defoliator

Spongy moths (Lymantria dispar) have plagued Northeastern landscapes for decades. These voracious feeders target a wide variety of deciduous trees, including oaks, maples, and birches. Heavy infestations can strip trees bare in a matter of days.

Lifecycle Timing:

  • Egg masses hatch in late April to early May, depending on spring temperatures.

  • Caterpillars feed for 6–8 weeks, reaching peak feeding in June.

  • By mid-July, the feeding phase is complete, and the adult moths emerge.

Winter Moth: A New and Sneaky Threat

The winter moth (Operophtera brumata), originally from Europe, has spread into parts of the Northeast. This pest is particularly damaging to maples, oaks, and fruit trees. What makes winter moths tricky is their early start: they hatch while trees are still leafing out, often going unnoticed until damage is extensive.

Lifecycle Timing:

  • Adult moths emerge in late fall, mate, and lay eggs on tree bark.

  • Eggs overwinter and hatch in late March to early April.

  • Larvae feed heavily on young, tender leaves through May.
